Anthony and Grace recently moved to St. Francis House. Anthony served in the Army from 2001 to 2006 as an infantryman and then in Special Forces. After leaving the Army, he worked a variety of jobs ranging from factory work to construction. Grace has her certification in secretarial work. Married for seven years, they have three lovely sons, Lucian, Grayson, and Bruce.
The family had been living in Crossett and acting as caretakers for a relative’s house. Recently, the owner decided to occupy the house, leaving the Durkes family without a place to live. Relocating to Little Rock was a logical choice for a variety of reasons. Anthony suffers from PSTD as well as diabetes and receives his care at the VA Hospital. Grayson who is four years old also has diabetes and is seen at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. The three-hour drive was not only difficult but expensive for a family on a limited income. Luckily, the variety of Veterans’ services in Little Rock made a move possible.
Early on in its history of serving Veterans, St. Francis House committed to working to keep families together. Working closely with the Veterans’ Day Treatment Center, this allows families like the Durkes’ to come to St. Francis House. The other programs at St. Francis House will help them continue to meet their goals. The Re-Integration program will work with Anthony to find employment, Supportive Services for Veteran Families is available to assist with obtaining housing and staff members at St. Francis House work closely with caseworkers from other agencies to build a comprehensive network of support including getting the children in school and coordinating medical care.
Eventually, Anthony and Grace hope to be able to have a house, and once the children are in school, Grace hopes to resume work as well. We are so glad to welcome you to St. Francis House, and we are pleased to be a part of your journey forward!
