Patrick McElroy entered the Air Force at 17 years old after obtaining his GED. He worked as an aircraft mechanic on one and two engine jets from 1973 through 1978. “We were stationed at Eglin Air Force base, Florida, but we went all over. We were in Lakenheath, England for a while doing airshows and other demonstrations, and training.”
After leaving the Air Force, Mr. McElroy started a painting and carpet cleaning service with some friends. “We would work six months and then take six months off. It was a nice way to live.”
It was also a way to get into the habit of drinking too much. Mr. McElroy stopped drinking in 2012, but found out the hard way that he not developed many coping skills or learned how to deal with people. He went prison for nine and a half years on an assault charge. “When I paroled out of prison I needed a place to go. My prison advocate negotiated my coming here. I had no idea what I was getting into. But it’s a good deal. St. Francis House can help you get back on your feet. The staff are helpful and the people are nice. You can’t beat it.”
Mr. McElroy is currently working on getting permanent housing through HUD/VASH and dealing with health issues. “And after that, I’m playing it by ear. I have five years of parole and I’m looking forward to just watching TV, listening to music and doing craft stuff like you can get at Michael’s and Hobby Lobby. There are all sorts pf things you can make that are fun,” he said with a grin.
