Making ends meet is difficult enough today with multiple incomes, but Lillie, her husband and his adult son are all disabled. “I’m on disability and my husband is on Social Security. His son is still trying to get approved for his disability benefits, but he can’t work due to his illness.”
They began coming to St. Francis House last year for food assistance. “We use a lot of different food banks, but I know that others need it so we try to come only if we are really in need.”
Lillie worked as a paralegal for twelve years before her disability caused her to leave her job. “I loved working in the legal field. It’s been four years since I had to leave and I still miss it.”
Lillie’s latest challenge has been the inability to follow her medication schedule because of the high cost of her prescriptions. “The cost was just so high we couldn’t do it. When I went off the last one, I ended up in bed for a week.” She was not aware of the prescription program at St. Francis House, but now she is checking in to that as well. “We really appreciate St. Francis House and the help they have given us.”
