Even in the middle of a pandemic, people still need food and medicine so armed with masks, disinfectants, and bags ready for pick-up, St. Francis House Social Services staff continue to serve. “We’ve added extra food to keep people stocked a little longer because our main message is ‘If you can, stay home!’ ” says Phyllis Jones, head of Social Services. “We’re working with a minimum crew, just myself, Rickey and Roland, but we’re getting everything done.”
Other changes include shorter hours (9 am to 2 pm), minimized intake questions and all clients staying outside the building. “We’re seeing differences in who we’re serving as well. The number of people needing prescriptions is increasing and the number of homeless and transient has also gone up. We’re also continuing to add new clients every day.”
