Daily Victories from SSVF: Getting Housed

It’s amazing how supportive of our Veterans the community is. I recently housed a woman that had moved here from out of state. She went to an apartment complex that doesn’t usually take assistance clients. But they let SSVF funds count toward her income, so she met the requirements and even let her go ahead and move in while we were waiting on her W-9.

Even if it’s hard to get someone housed, it seems someplace always comes through. Another Veterans has three boys, one of whom is autistic. She went to one apartment and had gotten approved to move in, but they refused to work with us for her deposits. When we explained, they said it “wasn’t their problem.” But something told me to try another apartment. I hadn’t worked with them before, but I had a feeling. They were great! They had a two-week waiting list, but they bumped her to the top. They worked with us on all the deposits and other needs and got her approved in a few hours. The apartment she is waiting on is being renovated so she’ll get a brand-new place. We have gotten her a hotel room for now, but she’ll be moving in soon! -Laurie
